Common Phrases for Gardeners

Perennials – comes back every year.

Annuals – lasts 1 year, need to sew seeds each year.

Biennial – lasts for 2 years.

Deadheading – cutting the dead flowers off the plant. (encourages new growth)

Germination – This is just a fancy word for when a seed sprouts and starts to grow.

Aeration – Loosening soil to introduce air and improve drainage. 

Harden Off – This is the process of getting young plants ready to plant outside. Quite often, you will leave them out during the day and then bring them in at night.

Pollination – It is the transfer of pollen between two plants. BEES !

Potting On – This is where a plant has outgrown its current potting arrangements and needs to be moved to a larger home. The process of moving it from one container to a larger container. 

Potting Up – This is where seedlings are moved into containers for them to grow further.

Propagate – To grow plants from seeds or cuttings.

Prick Off/Out – Separating out seedlings growing together and transferring them into their own pots.
